iCloud is a new service offered by Apple, via which you can
backup your iOS Mails, contacts, calendars, reminders, safari bookmarks, notes,
photos, documents and data. It’s easily if you wanna back up these contents on
your device (iPhone, iPad and iPod):
Go to Setting and scroll down to iCloud, then enter your
Apple ID info, then switch on iCloud backup for possible items.
After the iOS iCloud backups, go to your Mac where you can
only restore your iOS contacts, iCal Calendars and safari bookmarks:
Address Book contacts
- Open Address Book on your Mac OS X Lion (10.7.2 or above).
- Head to View and select Group.
- Choose All Contacts under iCloud.
- On the right side of your Mac Address Book, click the first contact. The name will be blue once it’s selected.
- Go to Edit on the menu bar and choose All to print all contact names in blue.
- Go to File on the menu bar, select Export -> Export vCard and choose the location where you wanna save the exported file. By default, the file will be named as “vcards.vcf”.

and click on Export Bookmarks, then specify the destination you want to save
the safari bookmarks backup files. By default, the exported file name is
“Safari Bookmarks.html”.
Mail
Back up mail messages on Mac
To back up your mails, you can drag the target mail message
from the message list to the location you wanna save to, for example, an On My
Mac mailbox, on your Mac. And you can also use iCloud to save your mail
messages:
- Open Mail and go to View menu and select Show Mailbox list.
- Head to Mailbox menu and select New Mailbox. Then you will see a location pop-up menu, choose On My Mac.
- Name the backup files and click OK
- Copy/back up messages to your offline mailbox
- Open Mail, choose the mail messages in the iCloud mailbox.
- Go to Message menu and click Copy To then select your offline mailbox. Or you can Control=click or right-click the messages, select Copy To then choose the offline mailbox from the contextual menu.
Note: You may have noticed that there are “Copy To” and
“Move To”, if you choose Copy To, you will create a copy while “Move To” will
create the messages copies and remove them from the original location.
Notes
You can back up iCloud Notes in the same way with
back-upping Mail messages. Be attention to the destination of your iCloud Notes
backups: they should be copied to the Notes mailbox in the On My Mac Section.
Photos
Back up photos to iOS devices via iPhoto. It’s quite simple
to do so: connect your iPhone to Mac and open iPhoto, then drag the photos you
wanna back up to your device.
If you wanna restore these photo backups to your Mac from
iPhone, go to iPhone photos to Mac for detailed info.
If you wanna back up the whole iPhoto library to an external
drive, you can:
- Connect the external drive to your Mac.
- Head to the Apple menu, and click “Go” then press “Home.”
- Open “Pictures” folder.
- Right-click the “iPhoto library” and choose “Copy ‘iPhoto Library’.”
- Open the external drive and paste the copied iPhoto library there
