Keeping your address book up to date is essential both for
work and for your home life. This is also true of your iPhone's Contacts app,
which stores all your phone numbers, postal addresses, email addresses and
other details about your contacts. Syncing your contacts to your Gmail account
ensures that your address book is always concurrent on your iPhone and on your
computer. The iPhone's Contacts app can be linked to Gmail using iTunes or by
an automatic wireless synchronization.
Syncing to Gmail Via ITunes
Step 1
Connect your iPhone to your computer using its USB cable.
ITunes automatically launches when your computer detects that an iPhone has
been connected.
Step 2
Select your iPhone from the "Devices" section in
the left-hand column in iTunes and then open the "Info" tab.
Step 3
Check the "Sync Contacts With" box and select
"Google Contacts" from the drop-down menu to the immediate right.
Step 4
Click the "Configure" button and type the username
and password of your Google account in the relevant boxes. Click the
"OK" button to confirm.
Step 5
Click the "Apply" button in the lower right corner
of the iTunes window. The data in your iPhone's Contacts app is exported to
your online Gmail account.
Syncing to Gmail Wirelessly
Step 1
Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and tap the
"Mail, Contacts, Calendars" button. Tap the "Add Account"
button, followed by "Microsoft Exchange."
Step 2
Type your Google account email address in the
"Email" and "Username" boxes, and your Google account
password in the "Password" box. Tap the "Next" button.
Step 3
Tap the "Cancel" button in the "Unable to
Verify Certificate" dialog box that appears. This is not an error, but a
part of the setup process.
Step 4
Type "m.google.com" in the "Server" box
that is now present when you return to the "Exchange" page. Tap the
"Next" button, and your iPhone successfully verifies your Google
account connection.
Step 5
Slide the "Contacts" switch to "On" and
then tap the "Done" button. If prompted, tap the "Keep on My
iPhone" button to prevent your existing contacts data from being
overwritten. Your iPhone's Contacts app is now synced to your Gmail account.
Tips
- When linked through iTunes, your Contacts app and Gmail account updates whenever you manually synchronize.
- When syncing wirelessly, your Contacts app and Gmail account automatically update whenever a change is made either on your iPhone or within your Google account.
- Switching on iCloud synchronization doesn't affect the link between your Contacts app and Gmail account. Your iPhone also syncs your Contacts to iCloud, creating a second backup of your data independent from your Google account.
